Powering Decarbonization: The Role of Program Management Office (PMO) in Achieving Net Zero by 2050
11:00 am – 11:45 am
Speaker: Hj. Ahmad Faraid
The presentation outlines the establishment of a Program Management Office (PMO) within Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Genco to implement Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) initiatives focused on decarbonizing existing assets. This initiative, known as Project Viridis, aims to achieve early retirement of coal-fired power plants, responsible repowering using cleaner fuel and green technology, and forming strategic partnerships for green technology development. The PMO has set measurable targets to ensure success, including appointing energy transition consultants, creating implementation plans, and establishing strategic partnerships. TNB’s commitment to sustainability aligns with national and corporate goals, with initiatives like carbon capture storage, co-firing with ammonia and biomass, and capability-building programs with OEMs. Sustainable project management principles are emphasized to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives, contributing to TNB’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Climate Disclosures and its Contribution to Long-Term Project Value Creation
11:45 am – 12:30 pm
Speaker: Saliyaty Ramly (Sali)
In Malaysia, sustainability reporting became compulsory for Main Market-listed companies in 2016, reflecting the nation’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. The Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry introduced the National Industry ESG Framework for the manufacturing sector in 2023, signaling a concerted effort towards sustainable development. Globally, there’s a trend towards standardized sustainability disclosures, with the IFRS S1 for General Sustainability Disclosures and IFRS S2 for Climate-Related Disclosures emerging as leading standards. Malaysia aims to adopt these standards, emphasizing its alignment with international reporting norms. While some companies will be mandated to adopt these standards, projects can proactively leverage sustainability and climate disclosures to enhance long-term value creation and safeguard their reputations. Embracing sustainability reporting not only fulfills regulatory requirements but also fosters responsible business practices and contributes to sustainable development goals.
